BiosolidsInformation & UpdatesConsider Biosolids as an Alternative Nutrient Source Biosolids Management and Conservation Planning Biosolids Program Annual Report 2003 Land Application of Biosolids Program Update Biosolids Progam Update—June 2004The Conservation District continues to support and help administer the Land Application of Biosolids program in York County. Under the Multi-Agency Biosolids Management Plan adopted in 1998 the Conservation District, DEP and the York County Solid Waste and Refuse Authority (YCSWRA) monitor all aspects of the program in York County. The Conservation District reviews and approves conservation plan implementation for each site, The YCSWRA monitors the land application procedures and maintains records on haulers and applicators. DEP reviews and approves all permits. Currently there are 60 permitted farms with approximately 4437 acres of land available. In 2003 four new sites of 216 acres were permitted. Before a site or farm can be applied to it must have an implemented conservation plan and must meet all permit requirements. Application records must be kept and reported to DEP.
Biosolids are an excellent source of fertilizer nutrients and organic matter for farms and cropland. Application rates are determined based on the actual fertilizer analysis of the biosolids and the nitrogen needs of the crop being applied to. The applicator works with the farmer to determine which crops will be spread and at what time. The Conservation District will assist with nutrient management planning as needed.
The District receives limited funding under a delegation agreement with DEP to perform educational and outreach events promoting the land application of biosolids. In cooperation with the YCSWRA, the District developed a tabletop display. We will also do presentations to groups explaining the program.
